Senior Quantum Computational Materials Scientist, US Phasecraft is a quantum algorithms company focused on developing the mathematical foundations for quantum computing applications that address real-world problems. Founded in 2019 and based in London and Bristol, UK, with an office in Washington DC opened in 2024, the company has secured $17m in Series A funding led by Playground Global. Our collaborations with top quantum hardware providers like Google, IBM, Quantinuum, and QuEra give us unique opportunities to develop foundational IP, inform hardware development, and accelerate commercialization. We are seeking a Senior Quantum Computational Materials Scientist to join our Washington DC team. This role involves guiding and coordinating the US materials research efforts, working closely with the US office head and the materials team lead. The ideal candidate will have extensive research experience in computational techniques applied to materials or chemistry simulation, with an interest in quantum algorithms for materials science. Responsibilities include algorithm design, optimization, resource analysis, and benchmarking, with opportunities to lead research projects. Job Responsibilities Lead theoretical and applied research on near-term quantum computing algorithms and applications. Publish research findings through publications, presentations, and patents. Act as a key contact for US collaborations in quantum materials simulation and discovery. Contribute to new research directions aligned with company strategy. Promote a collaborative environment within a small, international team of staff and PhD students. Support company growth through additional activities as needed. Minimum Requirements Expertise in computational materials science or related fields. PhD in electronic structure methods, chemistry, physics, or materials science. Proven ability to work independently on research projects. Strong publication record and deep expertise in relevant discipline. Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences. Experience in grant writing and understanding funding requirements. Flexibility to work across quantum algorithms and support company growth. Interest in near-term quantum computing. Preferred Qualifications Experience in materials discovery and machine learning methods. Knowledge of DFT++, GW, DMFT, DMET approaches. Experience with high-throughput materials screening. Leadership in complex, collaborative research projects. Experience building and leading scientific teams. Enthusiasm for learning and innovative research.
