The Domestic Violence (DV) Advocate provides a range of domestic violence victim services to both patients and employees of Boston Medical Center, as well as consultation with those working to support victims and survivors of abuse. The Advocate participates in multi-disciplinary, cross-departmental case reviews, training, and other institutional initiatives to improve the health care and employer response to domestic violence. The DV Advocate works under the supervision of the Domestic Violence Program manager. Essential duties include providing services for adult and adolescent victims of domestic violence referred from various hospital settings, with a focus on the Emergency Department. Services include crisis intervention, supportive counseling, risk assessment, safety planning, assistance with emergency orders of protection, victim compensation, and access to community resources such as safe housing, legal, financial, and employment services. The Advocate accompanies victims to court, legal, medical, and housing appointments, provides support and consultation on domestic violence dynamics, and conducts ongoing follow-up with clients. Participation in departmental and multi-disciplinary meetings, serving on the BMC Domestic Violence Advisory Committee, attending community partner trainings, and maintaining confidential client data for program development and reporting are also required. The role requires adherence to hospital protocols, infection control, safety procedures, and behavioral standards. Education required is a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Social Work, Public Health, Psychology, or related field. Experience required is at least 3 years of general work experience with understanding of intimate partner abuse dynamics and advocacy principles. Skills needed include training or experience in the health impact of domestic violence, excellent direct service and interpersonal skills, organizational skills, English proficiency, and preferably additional language skills such as Spanish. The position is full-time and onsite in Boston, MA.
