GENERAL INFORMATION
DIVISION : Rocky Mountain Farmers Union
REPORTS TO: RMFU Director
SALARY RANGE: $70,000-$85,000
APPLICATION REVIEW : Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis with initial review beginning on August 27, 2025.
PURPOSE OF POSITION :
Work in concert with Rocky Mountain Farmers Union (RMFU) leadership to coordinate state government relations activities on behalf of the RMFU organization and adopted policies. Monitor and influence legislative developments at the state level. Communicate with elected officials as well as officials in regulatory agencies at the state level relating to legislative developments, issues, rules, and regulations. Assist RMFU leadership on all policy issues and legislative efforts, including making in-the-moment policy decisions based on key policy priorities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervise RMFU state lobbyists.
Prepare and deliver testimony before legislatures.
Mobilize members to provide testimony and engage on policy issues.
Monitor and analyze legislative/regulatory developments and advise RMFU leadership on such matters in relation to RMFU policy.
Develop content on legislative issues and activities for use in the organization’s publications and news releases, including, but not limited to, the LegisLetter, Union Farmer, RMFU Newsletter, RMFU website, RMFU social media, and other digital communications.
Take a leading role in developing proposed legislation and lobbying campaigns. • Coordinate the RMFU Drive-Ins during the state legislative sessions.
Represent RMFU before administrative/regulatory entities and act as a liaison to other agricultural groups as necessary or assigned.
Assist with facilitating member-led policy development.
Coordinate with the RMFU leadership on all policy issues and legislative efforts and make decisions based on RMFU-approved policy positions during the legislative process.
Represent RMFU at boards, commissions, and task forces as requested and in coordination with the RMFU leadership.
Be a resource on legislative and policy issues for RMFU members and chapters.
Willingness to support RMFU where needed.
Extensive travel required.
OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Be an active leader on the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union team.
Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY DUTIES
Hire, supervise, and evaluate contract lobbyists
Direct RMFU staff concerning legislative and policy positions.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Understanding of agriculture and rural issues.
Understanding of the mission of Rocky Mountain Farmers Union.
Thorough understanding of the policy development and legislative processes.
Ability and willingness to engage in the legislative process from policy formation through final rulemaking.
Ability to advocate for a position that you may not personally agree with.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in interpersonal, group, and public settings.
Ability to work independently, organizing and prioritizing tasks to carry out government relations activities.
Excellent problem-solving, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills using a collaborative approach.
Good administrative aptitude, including computer skills with Microsoft Office products.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Required Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) with an emphasis in agricultural policy, political science, public policy, public administration, or related field beneficial.
Experience:
Legislative or policy analysis experience required, including but not limited to experience as a lobbyist, budget and policy analyst, or legislative intern at the state or federal level.
Experience in agriculture or agribusiness.
Preferred Qualifications
Education:
Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) with an emphasis in agricultural policy, political science, public policy, public administration, or related field.
Experience:
Experience as a lobbyist, policy analyst, or policy strategist.
Experience advocating for agricultural and/or rural communities.

Other Requirements
Willingness to travel, which includes that you:
Must have a valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and their own vehicle.
Must be willing to travel by car and commercial airline as needed.
Must be willing to spend consecutive days away from home.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
Position requires extensive travel.
Position requires time to be spent during legislative sessions to attend hearings and contact legislators, as necessary. It will also require time to be spent between sessions, attending hearings or meetings to discuss upcoming issues.
This is an exempt position and will require evening and weekend hours.
Position requires the ability to sit for extended periods, to have extensive use of arms, legs, hands, and fingers, to talk, see, and hear, and to have the capacity to lift or move up to thirty pounds.
