Job Description

The Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Chicago invites applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible position as Assistant Instructional Professor starting on September 1, 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The initial appointment is for three years, renewable upon successful review. The position is eligible for progression following appropriate time at rank and following review.

Responsibilities will typically include teaching 4 courses per academic year on the quarter system. The courses will normally include two in the Department of English and two in the University?s Core curriculum. Service responsibilities will include advising student thesis projects and offering independent studies in advanced topics as needed. The selected candidate will also serve as the Book Reviews Editor of the journal Modern Philology. This entails selecting books for review, identifying reviewers, working with the reviewers to edit reviews prior to publication, coordinating with the journal Editors on the timing of review publication, assisting the Editors in engaging an intern who supports the book review work of journal and coordinating the intern?s work sending review invitations and communicating with reviewers. The assignment may be adjusted in future years. Instructional Professors of all ranks are expected to engage in regular professional development.

Salary Range or Pay Grade:

$73,117-$78,965. The position also includes a relocation allowance for qualifying expenses.

The successful candidate must have at least a MA/MS or PhD in English literature or a related discipline, experience teaching at the university or post-secondary level, expertise in modernism and visual culture, and the ability to teach broadly in 20 th -century prose genres.

Experience in editing or working with scholarly journals preferred.
